Is it possible to live draw patterns on ipad?

I am interested in live drawing patterns in illustraitor using the pattern "repeat" tool on ipad, but every time I add one brush mark in the pattern, illustraitor exits out of the "repeat" layer and starts drawing outside of it, thus not repeating the drawing I'm doing. Are there settings I need to change to acheive this? 

The video of Affinity Designer is just a visual of the workflow I am trying to acheive.

When you have created the Repeat, you need to double click it to edit it and add lines to it.

Does that not work?

It only works once, for every individual line. I have to click back into the repeat for each line, instead of clicking in and drawing continuosly.
