Hi!
Im trying to create patterns for print on demand and can't seem to figure out how to export it as a seamless pattern.
any help appreciated!

How are you creating the seamless pattern in the first place? How you export it is highly dependent on how you create the pattern. Typically you will create extra content all around the edges of the artboard, that repeat what is on the opposite side - then export just the artboard. Or trim the excess. Or create an opacity mask...

I'm using the grid repeat tool and am clear how to move objects and make the repeats smaller and larger but when I'm happy with the pattern how do I select onlt the repeat to save it? This is on illustrator for iPad.

Have you tried using the art board tool, and resizing the art board to the bounds of your repeating pattern? Depending on how you created the pattern, you might need to create guides to snap the art board correctly, but for a grid repeat it should easily snap to the object bounds. Once the art board is properly sized, you should be able to export it directly.
