When I apply Effects > 3D > Bevel to text on my Mac, I get the spinning pizza wheel that tells me I have a long wait ahead. In fact, if I apply it just before I go to bed, it's often still processing when I wake up, and I have to shut down Illustrator and reopen it.
Is this normal? If so, is there any way to mitigate it?
Thanks.

Does that happen with all objects? Also with a simple square that has no stroke or effects applied?
Do you reboot the computer regularly?

I haven't had a chance to test it with anything but text yet. I don't boot reboot my computer very often.
However, I just discovered that the problem apparently isn't nearly as serious when I use my older laptop (MacBook Pro). It's weird that I have the problem mostly with a more powerful laptop running the latest OSX.
But it sounds like this isn't a common problem, right?

It will appear with complex artwork.
So if you apply the effect to text, that qualifies for possible issues. Please try simple artwork.
And: how much RAM on the machine?
Also: rebooting the computer regularly cleans RAM and also prevents other issues from happening. Personal computers other than servers were never meant to run without rebooting.
