3D Extrude and Bevel - not enough RAM

I've been having this issue often where Illustrator tells me there is not enough RAM when doing 3D extrude and bevel...Which is a lie because I'm running 32G of Ram on my iMac. I've tried force quitting all other apps and it still happens. Activity monitor also shows Illustraotr is hogging all the RAM. Is this a bug? How can I alleviate this RAM suck? I use extrude and bevel often so I can't have this happening.
