Align to Key Object Illustrator 25.2.1 Not Working

Hi!  The align to key object is not functioning properly.  It didn't work for a while and I came back later and it worked for about 3 or 4 times.  Now, after restart (computer and app), it won't work at all.  I'm on a deadline for a project and it's urgently needed.  Please help!

What do you mean by "not functioning properly"?

Please elaborate and provide some screenshots that may explain the issue.

It doesn't consistently work...sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't, MOST times it doesn't.  This is one of my most used tools becasue I design paper goods and the past couple of updates have, bascially, rendered it useless on the whole.  I've shut down, restarted (both app and computer), uninstalled, installed, updated.  I have no idea what's going on with it.

For further clarity...it will not select the key object (and highlight it).  It only selects both objects (words, text, etc) and aligns to the artboard....no matter if you select artboard, key object, or selection.  It's like there is no other option. I've tried on the panel and shortcut menu. They both react the same.

It is rather seldom that I recommend to trash the entire Illustrator Preferences file.

But in this case it may be worth a try.

Make a backup of the Preferences file before you trash it.

Hey Kurt!

The solution worked for the above, but after the latest update (25.2.3), the Align to Key Object doesn't work again.  I trashed the Prefs, but it still won't work. Any other brilliant ideas to try?
