"Cant open the Illustration"-Error for .ai file containing work paths.

I have a .psd file in Photoshop with 25 work paths in it, and I exported all those paths via Export Paths to Illustrator into one .ai file.

However when I try to open said file in Illustrator, I always get the error message "Can't open the Illustration"... and I can't figure out what the problem might be. The .psd file works perfectly fine. I get the same error when I export only one work path at a time. Exported .svg files open without a problem. 

Does anyone have an idea what I could try? Thanks.

If PSD files work, then you could try and convert all your paths to shape layers.

Then import/embed the PSD file. The shape layers should now be compound shapes in Illustrator.
