Is there any way to make illustrator save to legacy as a default?
I have to run 2019 and 2020 on my mac as 2020 won't run the plotter plugin. So I constantly go back and forth between 2020 and 2019. New files (from clients) open in 2020 by default and it's a constant confusion to keep the correct version to the front and to make sure I do "Save As" rather than "Save"
In reality, I just need 2019 to open 2020 files but Adobe won't allow that.

As a workaround you could record an action that does a save as legacy CC.
You can assign a shortcut to the action.

Software gets new features and old versions cannot deal with them. So that's that. Just thinking about which publishing application does allow opening newer files with an older version, but I cannot think of any.

Unfortunately, think you're right.
I think cs5 would open cs6 files, just had a warning that any 'new' features would not be shown.
....ahhh, the good old days......

And after this warning it would still not open the AI file. It would import the embedded PDF. And if you didn't save "PDF compatible", you wouldn't get anything.

From the Illustrator Actions panel.

I've just had a go.... I can only get it to save in a specific place, that pathname comes up in the actions panel.
I guess I need an 'overwrite existing" type of script.
Any ideas??
I would imagine this would be handy to quite a few people

Do you save the CC2019 file with the same name on the same folder? overriding the CC2020 file?

yes, that's correct

You may check if running the action in Illustrator's Batch mode could help a lot to convert many files in one whack.
Remember that Illustrator whacks are sometimes a bit bumpy.

Yes, and Batch gives you also more options to save in a different folder.

I can't seem to get it to save in anything other than a specific folder. I need it to overwrite the opened file.
Maybe this is too complex a concept?
