Applying effects to paths instead of compound shape

I was wondering if it were at all possible to apply an effect (Drop Shadow in my case) to only one path that's part of a compound shape.

I was wondering this because I technically can do so, but it yields no visible result.

The only visible result I get, is when I apply this effect to the entire compound shape.

See the video for a demonstration.

Some effects can be applied to parts of a compound shape.

Drop shadow is not one of them.
