So when I use the grid tool, I usaully add and remove columns with the arrow keys on the keyboard - same thing with the shape tool when I want to increase the points on a star or polygon etc. But right now it doesn't do that and I have to type it in and its really frustrating. So whats the preference settings to fix this issue?

It's usually some other application stealing your keypresses. And yes, that other app might be your browser.

You have to find out which app it is.

Check what else is running.

If you have antivirus running, check the settings.
