Artifacts on edges of curved gradients

I'm seeing some severe artifacts on some gradients I'm working with. These are linear gradients on a stroke (not gradient along stroke) and the problem persists even when the stroke is expanded to a closed path shape. The object i'm working with is quite small (.72pt stroke on a 32px canvas). The artifacts diminish in size relative to the object the larger I make it, but it is still very noticable. I've tried adjusting the path and redrawing it with a new shape – any curved path I make, expanded or not, produces this result
