Beginner - Paintbrush/Pencil Properties Fill colour not working

I have had no problems but downloaded AI to my laptop, my daughter drew on it first but said she had a problem with fill colour for the brush. 
Since then I can not get the brush or pencil to fill the colour I select in the properties. I can select the colour for fill and line but after drawing the line colour only remains not the fill colour which goes back to white box/red line (none colour). 
If I select the stroke I can fill that way. 
I have unistalled and reinstalled a older verison just to make sure it wasn';t a bug with the new download, i have tried to reset my preferences, opened new document but this problem is still happening, I am not in outline view either. 

can anyone please help? I am sure its just a simple button that may have been pressed when my daughter was on but I just can't seem to work out what it is.

Double click the pencil resp brush tool in the tool panel and enable the fill in the tool options.
