Can't double-click on a swatch to bring up swatch options

Macbook pro OS 10.15.5, Illustrator 24.2
Double-clicking on a swatch (both in the swatches panel or the toolbar) doesn't bring up the swatch options panel like it used to.

Did you try to restart Illustrator, your Mac or reset your Preferences?

Yes, I have done each of those things. 
Then I reinstalled Illustrator. 
I still can't double-click a swatch to bring up swatch options. 😞

What kind of swatch is it?

Is it really a color swatch? Or is it a pattern or a gradient?
