Cannot place or open image into Iluatrator

All of a sudden, I cannot open or place any image into Illustrator. The same image works perfectly in Photoshop, but Illustrator keeps on telling me the image is the wrong type (.jpeg). I have restarted and have tried all the previous versions of illustrator, but an action that worked on Friday, all of a sudden doesn't work today.

Please let us know what platform you are on- Mac or PC. Even though there are very simular. aspects between the two there are sometimes nuanches that create an issue. I am on a Mac and just did what you couldn't accomplish- the only diff was that my jpeg was jpg and sometimes that can cause a crazy issue due to the spelling. Also the file could somehow became corrupted. Is this a jpeg you created or one you downloaded? I would first restart your computer and try once more.
