CANNOT VIEW IMAGE

Hello, I am having a frustrating issue with Illustrator 24.2. Whenever I go to File > Open and select an image (JPEG, PNG) I only see a white screen. The thumbnail can be seen in the Layers panel but it cannot be seen on the main screen. I have tried several different files but receive the same result. I have attached an image for clarification. Thanks for the help.
