Cant align graphs with other objects

I am trying to create a circle graph and place a white circle in the center to make it more of a "ring" style.

When I select the cicle shape and the graph with the direct selection tool it will move both objects but the align commands do nothing.  I have also tried just selecting the graph - the align tools do not work in this case either.

The only way I could get the graph to align anywhere was to rasterize it (which I would like to avoid incase I need to update the data or colors of the graph itself).

What do I need to do to successfully align the shape object with my graph?

TIA.

attempted to upload the file itself but kept getting an error "The attachment's benefits of bioplastics graphic.ai content type (application/postscript) does not match its file extension and has been removed."

Unfortunately, Live Graphs do not (and never have) recognise(d) the Align commands (or vice versa).

Activating Smart Guides (see View menu) is one workaround to align them properly.
