Change a table cell background from gray to white

Thank you for any help.

I have a .png image from an Excel-style table that I have placed in an Illustrator file.  All the cell backgrounds are white except those used to illustrate how to use the table.  Those cells are shaded gray.

Using Illustrator, is it possible to change those gray cells to white?  I have attached a crop from the image in the hope it will help you see what I'm trying to do.

I am an Illustrator novice, so I ask for patience in your solution.  I have Photoshop on my computer as well in case that might be a more appropriate program, but I know less about Photoshop than I do about Illustrator.

Illustrator cannot do tables.

You would be better off to create tables in InDesign, which has a table function.

If this is about editing the PNG, you could create a grey rectangle in Illustrator and apply the blend mode "multiply" to it. But editing PNGs is generally better done in Photoshop.

Thank you for your kind reply.

You are correct; it is only about editing the .png.  It is not my intent to create a table, but only to eliminate the gray shading in this one.

Would you be able to guide me through implementing your suggestions with either Illustrator or Photoshop?  Would converting the .png file to another file format be helpful?

Openit in Photoshop and then go to Image > Adjust > Levels

and then move the slider like so:

Photoshop worked just like you said, and it's perfect!  It worked exactly like I wanted.  Thank you ever so much!  I'd have never figured this out on my own.
