Hi all. I'm fairly inexperienced in illustrator and need some help! I have a tiff file with a white background and need to do the following :
- resize the image to 1000 x 1000px,
- and remove the white background
- and save as a png file.
Please can someone advise what the best way is to do this. I only have illustrator and no photoshop. I have about 20 of these files to do, so hope it won't take too long. Thanks Nikki
Nicola,
As I (mis)understand it, you can, mostly working with the Transform palette:
1) Select the TIFF image, and position it with the centre at X = Y = 500px, using the centre Reference Point;
2) Change the W value to 1000px and press Ctrl/Cmd+Enter to retain proportions;
3) Create a white square with the Rectangle Tool with W = H = 1000, then set its cetre to X = Y = 500px, then Ctrl/Cmd+X+B to position it right behind the resized image from 2);
4) Set the Artboard size to 1000px x 1000px

What size are the images at the moment? Can you show any example image?

So you need to resize the images so the maximum dimension is 1000 px (i.e. images would be 586 x 1000)?
Attach images using the 'insert photos' button in the forum interface.

4) Set the Artboard size to 1000px x 1000px as well and make sure it coincides with the square from 3);
5) Export to PNG24 at 72 PPI or use the legacy Save for Web to get the right PNG size, preferably with Art Optimized to reduce any ugliness caused by the downscaling; you can tick Transparency, and then the white will be gone in the PNG.
