converting paths into multiple individual shapes

Is it possible to quickly convert a number of overlapping paths into an array of shapes that can be individually filled? The attached image will help explain. The pattern is made up of just two paths but has visually created about 20 shapes. I'd like to convert this from 2 paths to 20 individual shapes that can have different fills applied. I should add, I don't want outlines so the multi coloured filled shapes should butt up against each other. I've looked up how to make jigsaws in illustrator because if this technique were possible it would be a simple way of doing it. None of the tutorials I've seen take this approach which makes me suspect it isn't possible.  If it isn't it should be! I am using illustrator CS5.1 which I realise is pretty old now.
