Corner point direction lines converge

In Illustrator when an anchor point with two direction lines and one of those direction lines is selected with the direct selection tool the other direction point seems to join with the one that is lected and they move in tandem, no longer separately. 

Can aanyone tell me what I am doing to make that happen?
