Default save format... I'm at my wits end here....

Hi all

Illustrator is still driving me insane.
Plotting plugin still doesn't work with CC2020 so I have to open everything in CC2019. Clients still send CC2020 files because they just do.
Therefore, I need to ALWAYS save in 2019 format. Can I change the default on 2020 to save in 2019  without going through 'save as' everytime.  This horrible little problem means I have Illustrator 2020 and 2019 permanently open and the confusion is slowing workflow dramatically.

I guess the main issue is you cannot open 2020 files with 2019.  What idiot at Adobe thought that was a good idea????

The Illustrator file format is old and it causes issues (lots of issues in fact). So it needs to be modernized. And this has to happen at some time in history, which happens to be now. A lot of people are actually waiting for improvements, because they see other issues with their files.

At least Illustrator allows you to downsave files (not every application can do that at all).

So maybe you want to solve the cause of the issue (which is your printer driver). You might want to ask for a new version?

BTW: this is a public forum. At least 95% of people are not even Adobe staff.

Perhaps you can commission someone to write a script for you for downsaving.

If I could communicate with Adobe directly, I would.

The plotter plugin just doesn't work properly with 2020 even with their update.

The frustration is that everything worked with 2019, and an 'update' that stops things working while showing no other benefits (that I can see) seems counter-productive.

Your idea of a script is a splendid one, thanks for that. I used scripts many years ago (very basic) ... I shall look into that next week.
I do hope the 5% are listening
