direct selection tool

When I try to click with the direct selection tool on one of the lines, it does not select them for me, so I can't see the points and the handles.
I already did a version update and reset the preferences.
What should I do?

I am not sure what you mean. Are you able to post a screenshot of your problem?

Or,

Just to make sure, are you sure they are not locked (or their Group/Layer/whatever)?
