Hi,

I tried (object > envelope...) distorting for the first time and yes, it did what I wanted (to curve that banner), but it goes all the way through my work as a backround color around the edges. That part is not what I wanted to do.

How can I possibly fix that? Do i need to press a button to "finish" that?

I'm not sure how exactly you got to this point, but with the envelope-distorted object still selected, choose Object > Expand Appearance. This will make the distortion permanent (as opposed to a 'live' effect—like the 'finish' function you imagined). Then you should be able to ungroup the banner from that object behind and get rid of anything unwanted.
