dynamic white black color inversion

i want to create a drawing with white and black parts. shape should dynamically adjust color based on the color below. I have done this with pathfinder but this not  reversible - how can l do that in better way ?

There may be several ways, for example using Live Paint groups or using Pathfinder effects (see Effect menu) instead of the pathfinders in the Pathfinder palette.

Which version of Illustrator are you using?

Selecting the black objects and Alt-Clicking the Exclude option in the Pathfinder panel is another option.

It creates an editable Compound Shape.
