Files not opening properly in Illustrator

I'm having some trouble with my files. Not sure whats up. I pulled some sketchs into illustrator, vectorized them and colored them. Now when i go back and reopen them, the direct selection tool puts a large rectangle around them.

Not sure is i have messed up some setting or what.

So you have saved and closed the file?

ANd then reopened in the same version?

What does the layera panel say? You need to dig down into the layer.
