Font Stroke to Outline

I am using a font and would like to make the font look thicker, so I added a stroke in the appearance panel.  When I convert it to outlines to I can export as an svg it does not include the stroke.  Is there a way I can have the stroke included in the outline or is there a different way I should be adding thickness to my font?
