Kurt's answer about Comnmand-Y for Preview is correct but since, as you say, you are a beginner I just wanted to point out what is actually happening. If you look at the menu bar of your screenshot you'll see next to "Untitled-1" it says RGB/Outline. This tells you that you are in the Outline mode. Illustrator exists in two primary modes. Preview mode shows what the finished version of the file will look like including any imported images. The Outline mode exists as sort of a skeleton of the art you're working on. Any line art (vector) that you've drawn natively in Illustrator can be seen in Outline mode as unstroked and unfilled outlines. Any imported images such as a jpeg or a tif will appear in Outline as rectangles with either an "X" going throuch them if the images are linked to their original program or completely blank if the images are embedded into the Illustrator file. Command-Y will allow you to toggle back and forth between the two modes. You can work "live" in either mode.
