The behaviour to link files is the same since many years.

For example CS2:

menu: File --> Place

Platzieren_Verknuepfen_01.png

check: Checkbox [Link] (or similiar, I don't know the right english term for that)

Platzieren_Verknuepfen_02.png

That's all!

The file will be linked and not embedded and the option for linked files is available in the save options.

Did you check in the Links Panel if there are linked files?

Your image is not visible.

Can you show the Links panel with a link selected and the link info expanded?

Since there are 0 bytes of information contained in the linked file, there's nothing to embed.

I think I was misunderstood. I am asking why in the beginning when I wanted to create and save a new file I can't klik at the box that says "include linked files' '. at the past it was visible but since i reboot the computer and reinstall the program all the preference i once had are gone. how can i fix this so that the box will show as it should.

If there is nothing linked, there is nothing to embed.

If there is nothing linked, you cannot check the option to include linked files.

In your file:

  • select the image
  • in the control bar select [remove embedding]  (or similiar, I don't know the right english term for that.)
  • try to save your file again - the option "Include Linked Files" should be available again

For the future:

If you place an image - at the bottom of Place dialog window there is an option: [Show Import Options]. Be sure the checkbox is checked and then set: link files

If that works for you

Have fun

The link behaviour is the same, but the un-embedding you described was not available in CS5.

Hi Ton,

Don't see only black and white.

😉

Your helpx link only means: you have a button for un-embed since CS6.

But it was possible a long time before CS2. Unfortunately I have no older version.

See:

embedded image

Platzieren_Verknuepfen_03.png

relink

Platzieren_Verknuepfen_04.png

now the image is linked

Platzieren_Verknuepfen_05.png

Relink is something else than unembed.

Unembed (extract the embedded image from the Ilustrator file) was introduced in CS6.

What you described is unembed:

"In your file:

  • select the image
  • in the control bar select [remove embedding]  (or similiar, I don't know the right english term for that.)
  • try to save your file again - the option "Include Linked Files" should be available again"

I can create and rasterize something in Illustrator that does not exist as an external image. I can unembed the image and create an external file.

Re-link only works if you still have the image somewhere on your harddisk and can link it again.

In order to unembed an image in old Illustrator versions you had to go the Photoshop route.

Hahaha.

Thank you Ton and Monika. Now I can see the difference.

I always had and have the necessary images for the relink. And that's why I never have to un-embed an image from an Illustrator file before.

Thanks for your patience.
