how to align pictures in a 4x6 grid?

I have several pictures. How can I align them as a 4x6 grid or 5x5 grid and so on?

How can I define the vertical and horicontal distance between the pictures in the grid?

On the left side I have randomly aligned pctures with different sizes.

I want to align this pictures like a grid on the ride side.

And I want to be able to change the (horicontal and vertical) distance of the pictures.

Illustrator cannot do this automatically.

The Align panel can help a little bit. But it's far from what you dream of.
