I'm just wondering if anyone knows where the variable width profiles are saved so I can back them up?
I've got tech support arriving very soon with my new computer and I don't want to lose all of the variable width profiles I've created for a project I'm in the middle of but I cannot find where windows stores those.

On a Mac the VariableWidthProfiles are saved in the Preferences folder in the Adobe Illustrator Settings folder.

Assuming (dangerous, I know!) that Illustrator puts the file in a similar place regardless of operating system, go to the Adobe Illustrator folder that contains the application > Support Files > Resources > en_US (or whatever is appropriate for your version and settings) > Variable Width Profiles.

I hoped that would be the place, but that one gets installed when Illustrator is updated and does not change when you add new width profiles.

The one in the preferences is the most actual one.

I made that mistake too, I thought that the New Documents Profile folder in the Illustrator Application folder was a easy place to put your own document profiles in.

That was a mistake, it works, you get a new document profile but it is immediately copied to the Preferences folder, and that is the one that is used, whatever changes you make to the one in the Application folder, they are ignored.
