How to create a pattern template

Hi,

I'd like to understand how to create a template like the ones by Madpatterns http://www.madpattern.com/

I've searched everywhere, but cannot find an answer.

I want to understand how to create a template where everything is repeated - when I draw in a portion of the artboard.

Could you please help?

(I'm not searching how to make a pattern, I know that. I want to understand how to make a template like that).

The templates rely heavily on clipping masks, invisible helper objects and the transform effect. You need to have the layers panel and the appearance panel open to investigate the templates.
