How to do "flames" kind of shapes

Dear all, 

i am trying to recreate a simple logo based on a flamish kind of shape. However, i have no idea how i can do this shape symetrical. Width tool and Curvature tool does work but it is never perfectly symetrical. 
I would be glad for any advice.

Create the first half, open shape with end points aligned vertically.

Use Effect > Distort and Transform > Transform to reflect the second half from the first. Keeping the effect live means that any changes you now make to the shape of the first half will be reflected in the second one as well.
