How to make a template of a layer in Adobe Illustrator?

Okay "Boys & Girls", I am stumped once again, but I am getting there--where exactly? Well, to the land of better understanding.

I just imported an image from Pexels into my document in Adobe Illustrator.

Now, I want to make the layer it is on a template layer.

Why?  Because I want to place a new layer ontop of it and using my brand new stylus pen, which I still learning about, kind of trace over the templated layer beneath it.  I hope that make sense to you masters of the adobe AI universe.

Can somebody tell me exactly how to make my layer containing the image I just brought into it a templated layer and how to dim the image on that layer?

Open Window > Layers

Double click the layer on which the image has been placed.

Check "Template"

Okay, I think I just answered my own question:

I want to the image I imported.

I double clicked on the image.  That puts me in the issolation mode of my image.  (Kind-of like being "frozen in time.")

Then I adjusted the Opacity slider to about 50%

Then I exited the mysterious issolation mode by clicking the left arrow on the issolation mode line.

Then I locked that layer.

Now, I go to layer 2 and start to use my stylus pen to draw on top of layer 1 (my templated layer).

Note: I've got to review how I disabled the touch screen on my laptop computer, so when my palm touches the screen while using my new stylus pen, it doesn't make additional marks on my screen.  I made a special note on controling my touch screen.  If I have time, more on this later.

Okay, here's how to disable the Touch Screen:

Go to the Search Box (lower left of computer screen)

> Type in; Device Manager

> Human Interface Devices (HID)

> HID - Compliant Touch Screen and Right Click

>Left Click Disable Device

>Confirm "Yes"

>Close Device Manager.

That's how I did it!  Now go forth and make a difference!
