Can you show a screendump of the Open dialog?

And check the Illustrator version in the About screen.

Normally when you select a PDF to open via the Open command a PDF Import Options dialog box will appear. The box will show a preview of the PDF's first page. Below that is a "Select Page" option where you can enter page range details.

When importing a PDF using the Place command make sure the box "Show Import Options" is checked.

We would need to know that exactly. Please look it up. And please show the screenshots that Ton asked for.
