How to select multiple path in rectangle using direct selection tool in illustrator?

I am now learning on how to create a packaging. I got problem on how people can select multiple path in rectangle using diect selection tool in illustrator. When i use right click on the mouse, it highlight the rectangle and i cannot select multiple path in the rectangle.

You click with the left mouse button and press Shift to select multiple with the direct selection tool.
