I can't change the size of an object easily

I've been trying to change the size of this compound shape but it's not working. I can change the size of rectangles, ellipses and other polygons easily but I can't change objects from paths. The only way I can change the size is by manually changing the width and height through the transform tool in the sidebar. (I'm using macbook pro)
