Hello,

I have worked for weeks on a Brand Guide and today when I opened the file I just realized I worked for NOTHING! It simply won't open. It says: "We recovered as much as possible of the file, but some content might missing. Open to view the recovered file" When I open I get a big blank page! Nothing. Everything is lost.

I even tried to open it with an older version of Ai and I get a pop-up message:

"Can't open the illustration. The illustration contains an incomplete or garbled object description. Offending Operator:

This error indicates that the document contains one or more malformed binary data entries.

As can be seen in the screenshot. In the thumbnail preview file, I can see all content but when I open it, I get a blank page!

Does someone know how to solve this? gh1.jpgIt would be a life savior.

If you have a backup, use the backup. (If you don't make backups in the future).

Else, try to make a new document and Place the problem file.

Hi Ton,

Thank you for your reply!

Unfortunately, I don`t have the backup service activated... This was also a mistake on my part.

I tried what you have suggested, to place the content in a new document, and still does not work. I get the same problem, crucial content missing...

Does not sound good.

Another thing you could try is to open the file in Adobe Acrobat.

If that works (and that can only work when the Illustrator file was saved with pdf compatibility), save it under a different name.

Alexandru,

Placing the file as suggested by Ton can give you the PDF contents of the document, which may rescue you.

But there may be things/features missing.

There are websites that may be helpful (paid solutions), and it is possible to try and struggle with a reconstruction of the code, but those are tough ways.

If the place way fails, we can try to ask our Adobe staff friends for help and see whether they can rescue the whole document.

Hi Jacob,

Thank you for your reply!

I tried what Ton suggested, placing the content from the Ai file that is affected on a new Ai document. The issue persists. I get the same problem and that is: crucial content missing... It does not work.

If your friends can solve this, please ask them. It would save me as I'm on a tight deadline with this and I truly want to solve this out...avoiding weeks of work done for nothing.

Thank you very much!

Alexandru,

I have just sent a PM (private message) to ask for the help.

It is Friday for most, so I am unsure how soon anything can happen.

Below is what I have collected about other ways; you may consider looking into it,

Here are some websites where you can see whether it can rescue the actual file, and if it can, you may pay for a modest subscription to have it done:

http://www.recoverytoolbox.com/buy_illustrator.html
http://markzware.com/adobe-software/fix-illustrator-file-unknown-error-occurred-pdf2dtp-file-recover...
http://www.illustrator.fixtoolbox.com/
http://www.erepairillustrator.com/

As far as I remember, the first one is for Win and the second one is for Mac, while the third and fourth one should be for both.

Here are a few pages about struggling with it yourself, or maybe share crucial parts of the code here, and hope that someone (maybe one of our Adobe friends), recognizes the actual error in the code, in which case it may be quite easy:

http://daxxter.wordpress.com/2009/04/16/how-to-recover-a-corrupted-illustrator-ai-file/
http://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/kb/troubleshoot-damaged-illustrator-files.html
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/500/cpsid_50032.html
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/500/cpsid_50031.html
http://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/kb/enable-content-recovery-mode-illustrator.html

Edit: I can see that one of the links is the same as the one Mario has posted (the order of posts here is a bit confusing, threaded replies like mine here can be above earlier unthreaded replies like the one Mario posted, and the one Kurt posted).

Hi Mario.

And hi Kurt.

Can you share the Illustrator file (.ai)?

Which version of Illustrator are you using?
