I need to cut out an object in Illustrator but cant

Hi im having problems cutting out a section from the layer below, the black TS needs to be tranparent on the gold coin

Ive attached a view of my layers - i have tried to merge the TS layers but its greyed out, do i need to convert the layers from paths first?
