Identify which layer a locked object is on

Hi all!

I've inherited a complicated map .ai from someone else, with lots of layers. Keeping most of them locked is very helpful so I don't accidentally edit them; but I do want to edit some things. Rather than unlocking all layers (the nuclear option): is there a way to hover over an object in the viewport and show what layer it belongs to? Then I could unlock just that layer.

I've seen such a similar feature in other apps (cinema4d lets you right-click in the viewport and a pop-up reveals every object under the cursor position).

In maps there is usually a logic behind the layers. e.g. streets, names, water ... None of that in your map?
