Using up to date CC Illustrator 2020

Macbook Pro running Catalania 10.15.6

This afternoon Illustrator has stopped saving. When saving as .ai it 'prepares to save' then 'saves' for a very long time with the mac rainbow wheel, and then eventually pops up with a window saying only 'An unknown error has occured'.

It does this regardless of whether or not 'Create PDF compatable file' is ticked or not.

It will not save as .ai or .pdf at all.

I have enough space where I am trying to save it to.

I have rather a lot of work up that is currently unsaved, and so am unwilling to restart Illustrator as I don't want to loose it.

Thanks!

Illustrator saves information about the printer into the file and if it can't find the printer, then it will behave weirdly. You can believe me or not. But you can also search the forum and see that it does help.

In Preferences > File handling, you can try and turn off "save in background". Also: does Illustrator have full disk access in the system? And if you are saving to a server, try your harddisk.

Is a printer connected, set up as default printer and turned on?

If not, please try that.

Hey, I just tried it connected to my printer which made no difference – I don't really see what that would have to do with saving my .ai file! Thanks
