Illustrator 2020: Selecting a shape does not show the square around it for resizing

Hi folks.

This problem started a few days ago. When I select an object or shape, there is no square box around it. The boundary of the object/shape does turn blue, so I know it is selected, but I have no way to resize it by clicking on the corner of the square and dragging. What happened to the square?

Probably View menu > Show Bounding Box.
