Illustrator 2020 suddenly uses very high CPU percentage even for basic actions

I have been using Illustrator 2020 for nearly a year now. However, about a month or so ago, I noticed the fans running whenever I did anything in Illustrator. Even basic changes in very simple documents (like coloring in a single shape) cause the fans to run, and Activity Monitor shows that Illustrator is using a lot of CPU percentage (well over 100% if not more). As soon as I stop doing anything in Illustrator, the CPU usage goes back down. The program does not lag, but these kinds of simple procedures never caused high CPU usage and fans running before.

The change seems to have come with the upgrade to version 24.3, or it might have been the previous version, I'm not sure. I have tried the CEPHtml Engine fix that is found in a lot of posts, but that did not help. I have also tried resetting preferences, but that did not do anything either.

Any suggestions for what might be causing this and how I can fix it? Thank you!
