Illustrator / Bridge not fully on speaking terms

Bridge preferences show the correct association for .svg files, but when I click a thumbnail in Bridge and select Open the results are not as expected or required: Illustrator opens, and helpfully displays the selected file in the Recent list – but doesn't actually open the file. (leaving me wondering just what it means by Recent, but never mind) There are variants of this question in the Bridge forum from as long ago as 2018.

Any ideas?

So you have an SVG file and Illustrator can't open it?

If you open that file from your system interface (Finder or Desktop) does it then work?

Not can't, but doesn't when I start from Bridge. From the Windows file explorer, it's enough to double-click the file. If I try to open the same file from Bridge, Illustrator starts up and (mysteriously) shows the file in the Recent items: but does not open the file. I've checked the file asociations in Bridge Preferences and they seem to be correct.

This probably must be solved from the Bridge side.
