Mac OS from Catalina onward will only run 64-bit applications. My recollection of CS5 Illustrator was that it was only 32-bit.

No. No and No.

Maybe you can emulate Mac OS 10.6 on your Big Sur.

But basically: if you want to keep using museum software, then keep a museum system for that.

CS5 hasn't been supported for several years now, officially several operating system versions before Big Sur. If it worked at all before, the Catalina update should have killed it finally.

You already asked that and I already answered.

When Big Sur is finally released, the latest version will be running on it. Maybe one version before that will also run, but that's it.

CS5 was supposed to have been 64 bit, but able to run in 32 bit mode on 32 bit machines.  That should allow the CS5 apps to work on Big Sur, and yet, here we are.

64-bit isn't the only thing. With Catalina, Apple took steps to make sure all old apps (before 2019) were blocked forever. New Mac, new apps. It's the Apple Way.
