Illustrator keeps crashing after saving files (.AI, .EPS, & .SVG)

Hi Community,

I have a creative cloud subscription and use Illustrator (24.1.1) on Windows 10 (latest version) to create logos and icons for my company website. When saving simple icons as SVG, .AI or. EPS the application takes about 5 minutes to load and then crashes abruptly. No error message whatsoever. InDesign and Photoshop work like a charm, so it's not my graphics card which is the issue. Also tried adjusting the print spooler service without any luck. Can anyone provide a solution to my problem? Thanks in advance!

Does it work when you set the printer to the standard Windows PDF printer?

Also: where do you save files? If on a network or synchronized folder, please try some standard document folder on your HD

What do you mean to set the printer? Is this a setting inside of Ilustrator? Or a system setting? I'm on a Mac and have been struggling for days with the same issue - I've changed nothing on my computer to make this suddenly start happening.

You need to set up a printer in the system.

When you print a document, a standard printer is selected to print your document. The standard system printer I selected was one from the office when changing this to the standard Windows printer (Windows PDF) Illustrator stopped crashing. I don't know if this applies to Mac, but it might be worth a shot.

Has this always been the case or has the problem starting recently after, perhaps, an update of Illustrator? Either way you might want to try trashing your Illustrator preferences. Hopefully, resetting the program to its default will make a difference.

To do so on a PC:

You can try the quick way of resetting on a PC which is to hold down Ctrl + Alt + Shift when launching Illustrator and respond affirmatively when asked if you want to reset. There have been some recent reports that the window asking if you want to reset is not popping up but that the prefs are being reset anyway. If this works great but if it doesn’t you may have to manually delete them.

To do so: On Windows 7 and above the preference files are hidden. To find them go to the Control Panel and open Folder Options and then click the View tab. Then select “Show hidden files and folders” or “Show hidden files, folders or drive options” in Advanced Settings. Then delete (or rename) the folder at the end of this path: C:\Users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator [version number]\ Settings\<Language>. Make sure that Illustrator is closed when you do this. When you relaunch the program it will create new preference files and the program will be at its default settings.

The advantage of manually deleting preference files is that after you’ve reset up the program (make sure that no document window is open) to your liking, you can create copies of your personalized “mint” preference files (make sure that you quit the program before copying them—that finalizes your customization) and use them in the future to replace any corrupt versions you may need to delete.
