I recently purcased a box set of Cs5 and after I installed the App. Illustrator would shut down abbruptly the minute I when into any font aspect of the program.  In other words I would be working on a logo I would want to manipulatethe font I was using and bang, no more illustrator.  Minute latter the entire app.  shuts down and I loose everything I was working on.  If anyone has a clue - because I don't - please let me know.

Forget about it.

If you want to run old software, you will need to keep an old system for it.

I can fully understand all of your reasons to run that old version (CS6 would be a slightly better choice though). But then why do you want to update the system? https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/system-requirements-old-versions.html#main_Illustrator_CS5_system_requirements
