illustrator vector pasted into photoshop does not show

something strange is happening. When I copy an illustrator vector and paste into photoshop it creates a vector smart object (new layer) but it does not show. if I double click on the layer it opens in illustrator - so I know its there - I just cant see it. I'm working in Photoshop 21.2.1 and Illustrator 24.2.3

Please look inside the layers panel if you have something applied to the layer.

And since this is happening in Photoshop, you might want to ask for guidance in the Photoshop forum.
