Illustrator won't open files

I updated Illustrator today and after the update Illustrator will not let me open any of my documents. All I get is the rainbow wheel that just spins indefinitely. It was working fine before the update. I already uninstalled and reinstalled and that did not work.

Where are the files located?

Which system is it?

Is a printer connected, turned on and set up as the default printer?
