In illustrator is there a way to isolate the steps in a blend (blend tool) to create a gif from the first text to the second text? I want to show the progression as an animation.

You can use Photoshop to create the animation.

In Illustrator, make a separate layer for every frame in the animation.

Export as .psd with Layers.

In Photoshop click Create a Frame Animation in the Timeline window.

Select > Make Frames from Layers in the Timeline menu

Export > Save for Web

You can only use it when exporting an SWF.
