I am working on a vector illustration and I had to reshape one shape within a stack of objects in a logo. So I cut it from the original file and reworked in in a new document window. Then pasted it back onto the original graphic. But it was obviously burried beforehand somewhere in the stack and parts that were hidden before show on top. Is there a way to figure out at what level in the stack the edited shapes were before?

You cut it from the original file? Then all traces are gone.
It would have been better to copy it.

In that case you can check out the layers panel. Select the element on the artboard and in the layer panel menu there's a function to search that element. But then you'll have to look for the corresponding elements in the file you want to continue using.
