Linked files in Illustrator

When I place a file in Illustrator 2020 is automaticlly embeds it instaed of linking the file. How can I fix it so it only links not embeds. Thanks

When you select the file to place, uncheck Link.

I think she wants to link it, so check the link box, lower left.
